Subject: Positions in Aberdeen Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 14:05:41 +0100 From: Ran Levi Organization: University of Aberdeen To: DON DAVIS Dear Don, will you please post the following message to the list. thanks, Ran POSITIONS IN ABERDEEN the department of mathematical sciences in the University of Aberdeen is currently advertising two positions in pure mathematics. The application is open to researchers in all mathematical subjects, but at least one of these positions is likely to go to a topologist. The following paragraph is a short (and a bit formal) description of the department. The one after is the formal advertisment of the positions. Description of the Department. The Department has an academic teaching staff of 15, including two professors in pure mathematics, one in applied and one in statistics. The current Head of Department is Professor R.J.Archbold. The research interests of most staff lie in pure mathematics (topology, geometry and operator algebras), with smaller groups in computer imaging, relativity theory and statistics. Strong links exist between the research groups and universities and research institutes worldwide, resulting in regular interchanges of research visitors. The Research Centre in Topology and Related areas, director Dr.Ran Levi, currently has six members of the teaching staff, three research fellows and four PhD students. The department has excellent computing facilities and a full-time Computing Officer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN TWO LECTURESHIPS in PURE MATHEMATICS £20,470 -- £32,537 per annum Applications are invited for two lectureships in the DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES. At least one of these appointments may be made at a higher level for a suitably qualified candidate. The Department gained a Grade 5 rating in Pure Mathematics in the 2001 UK Research Assessment Exercise and it contains a Research Centre for Topology and Related Areas. The successful candidates will be expected to play a major role in the development of research in Pure Mathematics and to contribute to teaching and supervision at all levels. Preference may be given to applicants whose research activities relate to those of the current researchers in topology, geometry and analysis, but candidates with a strong research record in any area of Pure Mathematics are encouraged to apply. Informal enquiries are welcome and should be directed either to Prof. Robert Archbold (Head of Mathematical Sciences, tel. 01224 272756, email: r.archbold@maths.abdn.ac.uk) or to Professor John Hubbuck (tel. 01224 272757, email: j.hubbuck@maths.abdn.ac.uk).
