The title reflects the idea of Higher Dimensional Algebra and also the 
general status of this area of research, at least at the time. Referees of 
grant proposals wrote that this area was `irrelevant to mainstream 
algebraic topology' , whereas we judged we were constructing a new channel 
from the intuitive sources of the subject, and the article is intended to 
show these sources. In any case, we all know that `mainstream' flaps 
around like a sail on a yacht (to mix metaphors a bit).
