Subject: Question about travel From: Matthew Ando Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2005 08:43:46 -0500 To: Don Davis Don, Here's a question for the list. Matthew Dear colleagues, The University of Illinois this year changed its policy on reimbursing travel expenses of some visitors. They no longer allow us to reimburse visitors on F-1 (standard academic student) visas, unless the accompanying I-20 form lists the University of Illinois. It is also more difficult to reimburse travel expenses of those on J-1 visas. This is a substantial change; as far as I know, in the past we have had no trouble of this kind. I have heard that the University feels that it has been required to make this change by the IRS and INS. One possibility seems to be to ask the visitor's home university to pay for travel, and then invoice us, but at this time we are not sure that even that will be allowed. And unless the home university plays along, of course, it wouldn't work even if it were allowed. As part of trying to figure out what is going on, I wonder if you can tell me what goes on at other US institutions. It may be appropriate to write to me directly, rather than to address the list.
