Cohen, J.P. May, and L.R. Taylor. Splittings of certain spaces CX. Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 84(1978), 465--496. It seems likely to me that the answer to Nick's question can be read off from that proof, but I haven't written down details. Peter May
