A friend of mine is the head of research and development at Vredenburg, which
is a division of a company called AMS (www.ams.com).   He's interested in
hiring topologists to work on applied problems involving optical character
recognition, and he asked me to distribute the following announcement:

Though much of our coming work involves processing document images, and
recognition of printed and handwritten content, I want to emphasize that a
background in this specialty is not required.  I am primarily looking for
creative people with good mathematical skills who are willing to learn about
a new application area and try new approaches.  I would especially welcome
the perspective that topologists might bring to this work.

Research and Development in Natural Language Processing and Image Processing

We have an immediate need for:

Job title:              Researchers (senior and mid-level)
Job location:           Lanham, MD
Type job:               Full-time, exempt

These positions require U.S. citizenship.

Position Description:
Conduct research and development projects in areas including:

Document image processing (specific experience with document images
is helpful but not required)

Optical character recognition (OCR)

Information retrieval (IR)

Speech processing

Selected candidates will work on the full range of research and development
activities, including problem analysis, literature search, software and
database design and development, experimentation, testing, tool/product
evaluation, reporting, and publishing.  Senior level researchers will also
supervise others on projects.

Essential Skills Required:
        Research experience in mathematics.  Experience with document image
processing is helpful but not required.
        Familiarity with linear algebra, statistics and data graphing.
        Software development experience, as well as experience in writing
proposals, reports, and/or papers.  For senior positions, experience in
supervision of other technical staff is helpful but not required.

Nonessential Skills Desired:
        Relational database knowledge (SQL, PLSQL).
        Familiarity with sed, awk, Perl and similar tools.
        Ability and willingness to learn new programming languages and tools
quickly.
        Operating systems (Windows NT, Linux) commands.
