Date: Fri, 1 Jan 1999 12:07:22 +0000 From: John Hunton Dear Don, Could you advertise this on the topology newsgroup please? Algebraic topology will be one of the strongest areas we'll be looking for candidates from. I'll be happy to answer any informal questions. Best wishes, John. UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE NEW STAFFING INITIATIVES The University is mounting an initiative to further develop and strengthen all research groups in the Department. This initiative will last beyond the year 2000. In 1999, the Department will aim to fill a Chair in Pure Mathematics, a Chair in Applied Mathematics and two new lectureships in Computer Science. In 1999-2000, the Department will advertise new lectureships in each of pure and applied mathematics. In 2000-2001 it is expected that at least 2 further lectureships in mathematics will be created. The current research strengths of the pure mathematics group cover a range of topics including various aspects of algebra, algebraic topology and analysis, with particular emphasis on K-theoretic and homological approaches to representation theory and dynamical systems (via C* algebras and non-commutative geometry). The representation theory studied covers that of finite dimensional algebras, finite groups and quantum groups and their canonical bases with work also being done in Hopf algebras and in representable and generalized cohomology theories. Much of the group's perspective is taken from the techniques of the stable module/homotopy category, and of cyclic and Hochschild (co)homology theories and these are closely related to the interests within the group in the application of K-theoretic techniques to questions in dynamics. The group enjoys research collaborations and support for joint meetings with many of the neighbouring universities: Oxford, Cambridge, London, Warwick, Sheffield and Birmingham Universities, for example, are all within only 1 to 2 hours distance. We encourage applications for the Chair in Pure Mathematics which either strengthen our current research areas or enlarge them to take in some neighbouring area, but strong applicants from any area of pure mathematics are also welcome. The key requirement is an outstanding research record. People familiar with the US system might find it helpful to know that a UK lectureship is the equivalent of a US tenure track assistant professorship, while a Chair is roughly equivalent to a named research chair in a US department. (The proportion of UK faculty holding the post of Chair, for example, is much smaller than the number of US faculty hold the post of full professor, and is not to be confused with the US concept of chair of a Department.) Details of the initial 4 positions can be found at the Department's WEB page: http://www.mcs.le.ac.uk The closing date for applications is February 1st. Anyone requiring further information is invited to contact Professor Will Light email: pwl@mcs.le.ac.uk snailmail: Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Leicester, Leicester LE1 7RH, England.
