Subject: Special year, jobs Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2002 16:36:34 +1000 (EST) From: Amnon Neeman To: amnon.neeman@anu.edu.au Dear Colleagues, This email is about two quite unrelated topics. (1) You might remember that 2003 will be a special year in Canberra, in algebraic geometry and topology. Three weeks ago the funding for the special year was approved, and since then the organisers have been frantically trying to finalise the arrangements. You can look at the web pages http://wwwmaths.anu.edu.au/events/specialyear-2003 for the latest information. The web pages contain a list of the likely visitors. Since the list is very long and the funding is limited, we encourage people to get airfares from other sources. We will try to use our funds to help with local expenses. Needless to say, participants who can find other funding sources are encouraged to do so, to free up money for those who can't. The information on the web page will be updated regularly. This is especially true about the information regarding the conferences and workshops, which at the moment is still quite rudimentary. (2) Jobs: The engineering and computer science people at the ANU recently received a huge 5-year grant. They have already advertised thirty postdocs, and the total should eventually be about 90. The money is for computer-science related work, but the people involved are open to hiring pure mathematicians whose work is of interest to them. Here is the message, in their own words, which I include in this email with their encouragement. (Please note that the above was my summary and may have inaccuracies. The authorised version, which you should quote in your correspondence with NICTA, is below). ===================================================================== The National Information and Communications Centre of Excellence Australia (NICTA) has just been set up and is now advertising approximately thirty 3-5 year post-doctoral research positions: http://nicta.com.au/index.html Although there is no explicit programme in mathematics per se, there are several research groups in NICTA where mathematics plays a significant role. For example, there are groups working in Systems Engineering and Complex Systems, Algorithms and Complexity, Symbolic Machine Learning, and Logic and Computation. We would welcome applications for these positions from mathematicians whose work fits the brief of NICTA. Please could you visit the NICTA website and take a look around before applying. The web site gives the names of various researchers who will shortly join NICTA so you can contact them for more information about your particular circumstances. Do not be put off by the highly commercial nature of some of the wording on the website. NICTA will fund basic research, however there must be some arguable connection between your work and information and communication sciences. ===================================================================== Yours, Amnon
