How to Set Up Your Web Page Space at Lehigh

1. Open a Lehigh AFS Account (If you already have an account skip to step II)
• Personal Account

To open a Lehigh account, you will need to have gotten your Lehigh University ID and have your social security number with you. You will have to have access to a computer with a web browser.
1.  Open the web browser and go to the page: http://www.lehigh.edu/open/
2. Read through and accept the Computing Policy.
3. When you are asked for either your userid or your social security number and birthdate, enter your social security number and birthdate in the fields provided.
4. Fill out the spaces on the form on the next page, including your new password and the question-and-answer section. When you submit that form, you should get a page
If you run into problems, consult with the Client Services office in the Computing Center (294 Fairchild-Martindale; phone x83990).
 
• Departmental Account

You will need to get the proper paperwork from the Client Services office (294 Fairchild Martindale, or phone x83990), fill it out and return it. You will be contacted when the account is opened.
2. Set up your webspace.
1. Using a web browser, go to the page http://www.lehigh.edu/account/
2. Enter your username and password when prompted.
3. Under Other Functions, choose W3Setup. It will automatically set up your account and directories, as well as a default webpage, and will set up a symbolic link so that your default page is the page that comes up when your directory is requested.

What W3setup does:

• Set up the /www-data/ directory in your public directory in AFS space (/ahome/userid/public/www-data/)
• Create a symbolic link called webspace from your Network Server space to /ahome/userid/public/www-data/, so that when you do a directory listing (scan webspace or ls webspace) in the Network Server, you can see and edit your web space.
• Create a sample webpage for you in that directory, with the filename userid.html
• Alias userid.html to index.html. This means that if people go to your webspace:

http://www.lehigh.edu/~userid/
without specifying a particular file, they will get your sample webpage, userid.html.

 
Your webpage directory can be accessed through the webspace directory on the network server,
or through the /ahome/username/public/www-data directory.

(Note: your files are not on the Network Server; they are on the AFS servers.)

Your default webpage would be the username.html file in that directory.

It can be accessed on the web through http://www.lehigh.edu/~username/username.html

(username in all examples would be your username (Network Server ID); for example abc1 or inqqq).


The filename username.html is also aliased to index.html
