Images should be in one of the standard web formats (.jpg, .gif, .png). Generally, 72 dots per inch (dpi) is the most effective resolution, unless the pages are to be printed out, in which case higher resolutions may be appropriate. Adobe Photoshop, Elements, and Macromedia Fireworks are among the programs that can be used to create images in the proper format.
Once your image is in the correct format, you will need to open the page you wish to insert it in, and choose Edit Page.Click on the Image tab at the top of the screen and choose "From My Computer".
The Select Image window will come up:

Find and click on the image you wish to insert, then click "Select". The Image will be inserted. To change the attributes of the image, right-click on it and choose Image Properties.

When you Publish the page, the image should be published also.
If the image is already on your website, and you merely want to use the image without duplicating it, the procedure is slightly different. Browse to the page where you want to add the image, then click the Image tab and select "From Website". The Choose Image on Website dialog will come up, listing the websites you have defined in Contribute.

Double-click on the folder for your site to open it, then drill down to the image you want and select it. Then click OK.
