Equipment Description and Capabilities

Seating: 29 movable seats

The LCD Video projector is set up to project from the local computer and the VHS VCR. Laptops may be used with prior arrangement with media staff. The Dell 755 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz computer is equipped with an 80GB SATA 10000rpm hard drive, 4GB RAM, a CD-RW/DVD+/-RW, and a graphics card. These devices are connected to an amplifier and speakers. Devices are selected and controlled using the projector remote control and the audio amplifier controls. The local computer is connected to the backbone network.

Usage of the Devices

Projector

  1. Turn on the projector using the button marked "Power" on the remote control. It will take a short amount of time for the projector to warm up, so be patient.
  2. If you are using the computer. Power up the computer CPU and monitor (buttons on monitor and computer). You must complete a LAN login to use a public computer by typing your user name and password in the appropriate fields in the opening dialog box. Remember to log out when you are done. See the document "LTS Guide to Public Computing Sites and Classrooms" for additional information on use of public sites. If you need sound turn on the amplifier (sitting sideways in the wall, power button on the bottom edge), select C as your source.
  3. If you are using video, turn on the amplifier (sitting sideways in the wall, power button on the bottom edge), select V on the amplifier as your source and load your tape. The computer is the default input to the projector. To select video as the input, press the video button located beneath the cover on the lower part of the remote control. Adjust the volume as needed.
  4. Turn projector off by pressing the power button on the remote. There will be a confirmation prompt on the screen. Press the power button again. The lamp will go off but a fan will remain on for a cooling cycle.

Audio Amplifier

The sound portion of all equipment is routed through the amplifier located on its side next to the computer in the front of the room. Speakers are located on the wall on either side of the screen. To operate the amplifier:

  1. Turn on power ("P" lower left side). The indicator light will go OFF and the selected input will be displayed in the window.
  2. Select the correct input. Inputs have been marked with red letters:

    C plays sound from the computer ("CD" will be displayed). The computer may be used for CD playing

    V plays sound from the VCR ("Tape 1" will be displayed)

  3. Adjust the volume as necessary

    Video Tape Player

    1. Turn on the Amplifier and press V.
    2. Power up the Epson projector and select Video by press the video button located beneath the cover on the lower part of the remote control. If the screen is blue, press play on the VCR
    3. Like all VCRs, press power, load tape, press play.
    4. Adjust volume as needed.

    CD Player

    1. Use CDROM drive in the computer to play music CDs. Select "C" on the amplifier.

Power Down the Equipment

  1. Before leaving the room you MUST logout of the system. Double click the bright yellow exclamation point icon on the Windows Desktop. You may then select "Shutdown" or "Logout": one button clears the system and leaves the computer ready for the next user; the other turns off the computer. If you make no selection your account will be logged out and the system will return to the login screen. If you fail to logout, the next user of the system will have access to your account and files.
  2. Remove your tape and power off the VCR, if used.
  3. Press the power button on the projector remote to turn off the projector and related equipment. A confirmation message will be displayed. Select "Power Off" again to turn off the system.

Potential Problem Areas

Notes on Computer Usage

Upon power up, the computer will respond with "Do a complete software reload [Y/N]]". If you press Y within 8 seconds the computer will reload all software from the network and restore the computer to its original operating condition. The reload may take as long as 10 minutes and MUST NOT be interrupted. A system reload is recommended if you are having problems with operation of the computer or software. If you wait without entering any keystrokes, the computer will run Windows from the hard drive. The computer is set up with a base set of programs. Picture Taker may be used to load additional programs. These programs will be lost if the system software is reloaded.
