HARDWARE

All desktop systems are connected to the fiber backbone network.  Select HARDWARE for a listing of computing equipment at other locations.

There are a total of (5) HP network printers available to the desktop and portable computers. Two of them reside in EWFM room 400. The printer named MART8A-RM400A-HP4250 print for the following positions within room 400: A, B, C, D, I, and the LS machines, LS-A, LS-B, LS-C, and LS-G. The printer named MART8A-RM400B-HP4250 print for the following positions: E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, and the Macs, Mac-A, Mac-B, Mac-C, and Mac-D. The printer in room 449 (MART8A-RM449-HP4250) prints for the following positions located in 449: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, EXP-A, EXP-B, EXP-C, EXP-D, and the soon-to-be scanner positions A, B, and C.

The printers located on the 5th floor (MART8A-RM500-HP4250) and the 6th floor (MART8A-RM600-HP4250) print for the computers located in those rooms.

Most systems are Dell Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz machines with 2GB RAM, 80GB hard drive, CD-RW/DVD, and 256MB video.   Please bring your own headsets or check one out at the Help Desk.

The Library Services kiosk computers are also the Dell Intel Core 2 Duo systems.  These machines are to be used to access library services such as the on-line catalog and databases and are intended to be used only for a short duration.

There are also (3) self-service scanners to make copies of library materials (within the constraints of copyright law). The scanning equipment includes Dell Intel Core 2 Duo PCs running Windows XP and HP 5530 Photosmart scanners in the south end of the first floor, next to the photocopiers.

The soon-to-be scanner positions are intended for fast self-service scans of text and pictures. The images can then be saved to a microdiskette, CD, to a jump drive, or to the network H: drive. For intensive scanning work or image editing, go to the Media Center, which has image editing and OCR software.

Note: These machines can be rebooted, but please ask for assistance before you refresh/reload the hard disk image. If the hard disk image is refreshed/reloaded, the scanning software will need to be reinstalled.

For assistance with the scanning equipment at EWFM Library go to the Help Desk.

The Express Computing systems are intended for brief sessions (printing a document, checking e-mail, etc.)  Please limit your time to 10 minutes when others are waiting.  These systems are Profile 6, 3.4GHz machines with 1GB memory, 80GB ATA 7200rpm hard drives, and a CDRW/DVD drive.    If a software problem requires reloading the operating system, see the circulation or help desk for the reload disk.

There are 10 laptops available for use. They can be loaned for a maximum of 4 hours. These systems are Dell Latitude D620 machines equipped with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 1GB memory, 80GB hard drive, CD-RW/DVD-RW, 14.1 wide-screen Active Matrix displays, 256MB nVidia graphics card, extended-life battery, internal modem, PC card slot, both wired and wireless LAN adapters, and are pre-configured for Lehigh's secure wireless LAN access. Ask the Help Desk or Circulation Desk for assistance if you have difficulties connecting. Laptops are loaned pre-loaded with the MS Windows XP Professional operating system, MS-Office 2007, CD/DVD burning software, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox web browsers, Mozilla Thunderbird email, SSH, various media players, and WIRED software to access your personal LAN file space and print to the Public Site printers. Library laptops also give you the flexibility to installl your own software should the University not have a program you need to run or test.

The iMacs are designed to run continuously - please, do not power them off.

They use Kerberos authentication, local disk for user home directories, and do not require "refreshing". After login, you have network access to AFS and Active Directory files. Your H: folder is conveniently placed on the right side of the Dock for easy access. To access your AFS folder run Mount-AFS-Home-Dir.

Each iMac runs Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.10), sports a 20" wide-screen, flat-panel display, USB and FireWire ports, iSight camera, Airport and Bluetooth, 1 GB of memory, 250 GB of disk, a fast Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a dual-layer DVD SuperDrive.

What can you use these machines for? Mail, web surfing (Safari and Firefox) and iChatting, for sure. Transfer files to and from your Bluetooth cell phone. Or read mail with Mail.

Connect a digital still or video camera to a FireWire or USB port, and use the excellent iLife ’06 personal digital media productivity tools iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and Garage Band to create rich multi-media content. Then publish your results to iWeb or use iDVD to burn a DVD that is playable on almost any computer or home DVD player.

Of course, the Microsoft Office 2004 Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and EndNote X is also available, as are scientific applications such as Mathematica. The X11 and Terminal program in the Utilities folder provide access to a complete Unix development environment. Or use XCode for state-of-the-art Cocoa development.

Other cool apps include Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Dreamweaver and the rest of the Macromedia Studio Suite, and SFTP.

Remember to logout when you are finished (click on the Apple menu at the top-left of your screen).
