Logging into HPC machines using PuTTY

PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator.

The latest version is beta 0.60.

Download PuTTY from its official site. It is recommended to download the Windows Installer that contains everything except PuTTYTel.

Start PuTTY

1. Start PuTTY from "Start > PuTTY".

2. You will see a dialog box like this:

3. Type hostname (e.g. leaf.cc.lehigh.edu ) in the Host Name Box. Then click "Open" button.

4. You will probably see one dialog box after clicking "Open". Please click "Yes".

5. The prompt will ask you login name and password.

6. After typing your login name and password, you will be able to login onto servers successfully like this:

Please notice our note every time you login to the server. We may have some important information announced there.

Forwarding X11

To use the graphical interface, you need to enable "X11 forwarding" option in the configuration dialog box.

However, PuTTY does not provide X11 environment. For on-campus users, we have X-win 32, which has pre-configured profiles for Leaf, Altair and Corona machines. For off-campus users, please refer to any open source X11 environments like Cygwin, XFree86.

Coloring

If you want to change the default color scheme in PuTTY, you may refer to "Colours" option under "Window" selection.
