Instructions for using Matlab (R2009a)

  1. Run Graphical Interface
  2. Run Non-Graphical Interface
  3. 3rd Party Toolbox

Currently, Matlab is installed on Leaf and Altair (See hostname and how to login).  The system architecture on Leaf is 32-bit and on Altair it is 64-bit.  Although sometimes 32-bit programs can be easily run on 64-bit without changing a line of code, we cannot guarantee that it is always the case.

Run Graphical Interface

In order to run Matlab Graphical User Interface (GUI), you need to make sure your log onto the servers with graphical support.

After you successfully log onto the servers, enter the command "matlab" in the command line and then a graphical splash screen should appear like this:

Attention: XWin-32 and Cygwin may not be 100% compatible with Matlab graphical interface.

Run Non-Graphical Interface

The command-line-only interface may be accessed by adding the "-nodisplay" option to the matlab command. Performance may be further improved by not loading the Java Virtual Machine, by specifying the '-nojvm' option.  Here is one such example:

matlab -nojvm -nodisplay

3rd-Party Toolbox

Due to varying software requirements, we cannot guarantee that all 3rd party toolboxes will operate in all environments at Lehigh. If you are in trouble of installing or configurating your toolbox, please feel free to contact us.

The following table lists existing problems or solutions to some toolboxs we know.
