Macs at Lehigh 101: Saving to the H-drive

As easy as Macs can be to use, they can take some getting used to, especially in the environment of a large network like Lehigh's. In the case of the H-drive, even when you've got the MacConnector installed, and loading it up for you and putting it on the desktop, it might be hard to find from within an application, like Word, when you want to save a file there.

There are two tricks to this: 1) displaying the file navigator and 2) locating your H-drive by the server name rather than the volume label (usually your username). The picture below shows a red circle around the carret button which toggles the display of the file navigator.

The second picture shows a red circle around the file system entry for the H-drive. Note that it's listed under "Shared" items, which come from the network rather than "Devices" which are attached directly to the machine.

Also note that the listing shows the name of the H-drive server that your files are on instead of your username -- something like "home10.cc.lehigh.edu" (or home11, or home12, depending on your username). This can be a bit confusing initially, but once you know, it should be easy enough to find. Clicking on the entry will show the contents of your H-drive.
