US-China Winter School on New Functionalities in Glass
Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China

January 4-15, 2010

The goal of the US-China Winter School on New Functionalities in Glass was to expose interested students to the crucial role played by glasses in the cutting-edge applications of today, and the emerging technologies of the future.
The successful candidates learned about the newest frontiers in glass science and technology, and their potential contributions in energy, healthcare, defense and telecommunications.
Our aim is that the graduates of this program will apply their newly acquired knowledge to their current or future materials research, and ultimately contribute to the development of new functionalities for glass and related materials.

The Winter School covered a number of topics and consisted of 15 lectures presented by leaders in the field from US, China and France. In addition there were visits and tours of the most advanced programs of glass research in Chinese Institutes.

Zhejiang University is located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province only 120 miles (2 hour drive) from Shanghai. This area is full of history, culture and beautiful scenery. Therefore guided tours and visits were also planned to major cultural sites and attractions. This winter school provided an educational and cultural experience of a life time.

In total, 15 students from the US were selected by a Selection Committee, along with 15 students from China. These students lived within the same facility to promote further interaction, opportunity for discussion and friendship.
