Day
Three - 9 miles, 2000 feet ascent
Stonethwaite to Grasmere
This was
a short day, but a good one nonetheless. It probably makes
sense to walk from Stonethwaite all the way to Patterdale in
one section. But breaking it into two legs and having the extra
time affords an opportunity to walk optional high routes.
The path out of Stonethwaite is a gradual
climb that gets steeper on the approach to Greenup Edge. Then
it's a walk through a mucky high moor and the option of following
the valley path along Far Easdale Gill or one of the higher routes.
I chose to walk over Calf Craig, Gibson Knott and Helm Craig
and was rewarded with clear views of the valley below and of
Grasmere Lake in the distance. The descent from Helm Craig is
steep, but not difficult, and the short day's walk left ample
time to explore in Grasmere.
