In this class, we will explore the legal and ethical standards that determine what the media can do and think critically about whether the media lives up to those standards. By the end of the semester, you should have a better understanding of:

  • How the American legal system works;
  • The sources and current state of First Amendment protections;
  • Some of the ethical and legal constraints on the media; and
  • Why law and ethics are not the same.

Resources

  • Trager, Russomanno and Ross, The Law of Journalism & Mass Communication (2007 edition)
  • Philip Patterson & Lee Wilkins, Media Ethics: Issues and Cases (6th edition)
  • Turning Technology clickers -- used for attendance, surveys and quizzes in class
  • Handouts distributed in class and readings posted on or linked from the course Web site

We will also be using Blackboard for discussions and for handouts. Please refer to the syllabus, weekly schedule and daily Web pages (linked above) for more information.

If you have any questions, please e-mail or call Prof. Olson at (610) 758-5825.
