PRODUCTION

The Epitome is produced 100% digitally. Students handle all aspects of production; they design layouts, write copy and captions, edit pages, take photographs and set the editorial policy. Two dedicated advisers help ensure the financial well-being and future success of the yearbook, and they provide support to staff members who need assistance.

DESIGN

Page layouts are created in Adobe InDesign CS2. After consulting with each staff, the editors creat templates for each section's layout design. Staff members with then write the copy and captions for the page and crop and place photographs onto the layout. The editor in chief, with assistance from a design consultant from Taylor Publishing, creates a design for the cover, endsheets and divider pages.

PRINTING

The book is printed by Taylor Publishing Company which provides sales representatives, a software consultant, plant consultant and a design consultant.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Students on the photography staff and professional photographers from Davor Studio take the photos that appear in the Epitome.

STAFF

The Epitome is an entirely student-run publication. Students design layouts, write copy and captions, edit pages and set the editorial policy.
Two dedicated advisers help to oversee business operations and dealing directly with the publishing company.

Students on the Epitome staff come from all walks of life and all majors. Students represent majors from every field offered at Lehigh; from marketing and journalism to mechanical and electrical engineering. Working on a professional publication offers journalism students another opportunity to apply their skills and gain hands on experience that will benefit them in the future. The Epitome also allows students to work with each other in a team environment, giving them valuable social skills and experience with real life situations, something that no classroom can offer. It is also a great way to make new friends!

F
ACULTY ADVISERS

Linda Lipko serves as the adviser to the Epitome as well as business adviser to The Brown and White newspaper. She is the academic coordinator and publications coordinator for the department of journalism and communications at Lehigh. In this capacity, Linda keeps the department up and running, handling most of the department's day-to-day financial and administrative operations. In 1990, Linda was honored with the Perry & Carol Zirkel Award. The annual award recognizes outstanding performance and contributions by a nonexempt staff member.

Diane Dymek serves as the assistant adviser to the Epitome, and has done so for many years. She is the assistant coordinator for the department of journalism and communications, serving as the first line of defense. Diane also supervises The Brown and White business staff.

HISTORY

The oldest existing publication at Lehigh, the Epitome was first published in 1873 for one year, then again in 1876 and continues to today. The earliest Epitomes were about 50 pages and contained class histories collected and written by a class historian, as well as lists of fraternities, clubs and class teams. There were no photographs, only rough sketches.
As the popularity of the publication increased, the board of editors, originally three students, was expanded to five and eventually the project was deemed too important for the sophomore class. It was subsequently handed over to the junior class. From then, the Epitome took on a more literary spin, including stories and humorous anecdotes from students. Slowly, photographs of the sports teams and clubs were included, but it wasn't until 1914 that photos of graduating seniors were included in a separate section.

In 2003, the Epitome moved into Coppee Hall along with the entire journalism department. After an extensive multi-million dollar renovation, one of Lehigh’s oldest buildings now features some of the most advanced computing and technology resources available on campus. Once produced mainly by hand, all aspects of the yearbook from page layout and design to photography are now done 100 percent digitally.

At a time when many universities are discontinuing production of yearbooks because of lack of funds and interest, the Epitome stands strong, capturing the memories and history of Lehigh through a new century.
