Lehigh SBDC Celebrates Small Business Week!

To celebrate both National and PA Small Business Week, the Lehigh SBDC was honored to be part of two great local events. Our first event on May 3rd recognized Barker and Barker Paving Co. for winning the Eastern PA Small Business Administration Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year!

Owners John and Gavin McGeehan received accolades and congratulations from Congressman Charlie Dent, PA Senator Lisa Boscola, the PA Department of Community and Economic Development, and representatives from US Senator Pat Toomey, PA Representative Steve Samuelson, and Bethlehem Mayor Robert Donchez who declared May 3rd, 2016 as Barker and Barker Day in the City of Bethlehem!

Eastern PA Veteran Owned Small Business Award Recognition


On Wednesday, May 4th, Congressman Charlie Dent hosted Small Business Day at the Northampton Community College Fowler Southside Center to provide free training seminars put on by the Lehigh SBDC to educate his constituents on starting a business and financing options, as well as growth opportunities through government contracting and international trade!

About the Lehigh University SBDC

The mission of the Lehigh University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is to provide entrepreneurs and small business owners with the knowledge needed to make smart decisions and prosper.

The Lehigh University SBDC provides consulting services and educational programs to entrepreneurs wanting to start or grow a small business. SBDC consultants work one on one with entrepreneurs to help test a new business proposition, shape a business plan, or investigate funding issues. Addressing topics ranging from financing to issues to marketing tactics, SBDC programs serve to inform and assist entrepreneurs with the many tasks that business owners face.

Consultations with staff are by appointment only such that we encourage you to submit your Request for Service form prior to coming to our offices.


Our Services

For Pre-Venture

Those exploring the idea of a new business who do not have previous business experience can start working with the SBDC by attending our "First Step Pre-Business Workshop." The content is a general overview of what it takes to start a business. The sessions are held at various locations in Northampton, Lehigh, Upper Bucks, and Northern Montgomery counties. An online version is also available for those who cannot attend in person. More information can be found on the SBDC seminars page.

The second phase for start-ups is using our website's resources to fine-tune and develop your start-up concept. The Resources page is your connection to demographics, market research, municipal contact information, and more. Complete the Request for Service form for additional follow-up assistance.


For New and Existing Business

Established companies can work with SBDC consultants and staff to receive help with a wide array of projects ranging from financing and human resources to government contracting and international trade. Complete the Request for Service form to become a client. Existing businesses, please use this link for services. If you have previously worked with the SBDC, please call us at 610-758-3980.

The First Step seminar covers the nuts and bolts of starting your business and building your business model. Have you always had a dream to start your own business but didn't know where to start? This workshop will help aspiring entrepreneurs to begin the process of successful business ownership.

In the Second Step seminar, attendees will learn about funding options for small businesses. Lender requirements will be discussed, as well as alternative financing options and local loan programs. The business model will be reviewed, with an emphasis on external forces that affect a business strategy.

Lehigh University SBDC Aids PA Company to Bring Jobs Home

When the owners of Kempton, PA-based Tree Armor contacted the Lehigh University SBDC for assistance in marketing their coiled protective tree wrap to government agencies, they opened the door to a broad range of services to assist their small business.

The SBDC's Government Marketing Director David Dunn learned of Tree Armor's quality and production issues with their overseas manufacturer, leading to staff assistance in value-engineering their product and bringing the manufacturing back to the U.S.
