- New Faculty, Graduate Students or new Students should obtain ID cards at the Lehigh University ID Office, which is located in the Ulrich Center (Building 39), on the upper floor of Grace Hall next to the Post Office.
- Special cards are available through the Office of Access Control for persons authorized for access but who do not qualify for the regular ID card given to Faculty, Staff and Students.
This would apply, among others, to departmental volunteers ( or wage
workers ) with a legitimate after hours purpose on departmental
business, cooks in sororities, vendors, etc. Access is granted on approval of the appropriate department in such situations.
- If you obtain your new card at the ID Office in the Ulrich Center and your card is to include access
to a Residence Hall or Academic Area, be sure to mention it when
obtaining the card. Access Priveleges are granted through the Access
Control Office, not the ID Office, so communication will be necessary
before your card will permit access. Better still, if it is for an
Academic area, ask the department secretary to send e-mail confirming
the request to inlock@lehigh.edu as well. Access Priveleges are NOT automatic, even to Faculty/Staff.
- You only have access to areas where you have been authorized to go.
Use of your card in areas to which you are NOT authorized may subject
you to disciplinary action. If you are in a Residence Hall, you will
have access to that Residence Hall and its associated doors, but not to
other Residence Halls. If you are Off-Campus, you will not have access
to any of the Residence Halls without special permission based on a
pre-defined need.
- Also, be aware that even if your card works it does not imply permission to enter the building. Some departments may limit your hours independently of the hours the card works.
- Access to those Academic Buildings using the Card Access system is based on departmental authorization,
and requires that you obtain permission from the person in charge of
the department. That person will then forward a list of authorized
people to the Office of Access Control. Within three days following
receipt of that list, all names on the authorized list will normally be
granted access priveleges using the card. Faculty and Staff also need to go through the department for authorization.
This creates a single point of contact so that access problems can be
corrected much more easily. Faculty are normally given access only to
those buildings to which they have a legitimate "after-hours" need.
- Remember that student access to Academic Buildings is a privelege, and can be withdrawn if misused or abused.
- If your card is lost or stolen, report it IMMEDIATELY. During business hours it can be cancelled by contacting the Office of Access Control at 42 University Drive. ( Click here for directions ) After hours, the card can be cancelled by requesting its cancellation through the Campus Police at 758-4200.
- It will be necessary for you to stop by the new ID office in the Ulrich Center ( or the Office of Access Control at 42 University Drive for non-Lehigh personnel ) on the next business day. There is a $10 fee ( charged to your Bursar bill ) for the replacement ID.
- If your lost card includes building access, be sure to mention it to the ID Office,
to reduce the number of steps necessary to change the Access levels
involved. This reduces the ( already unlikely ) possibility of the
newly issued card not working for Building Access. Also, if you require a temporary or replacement set of residence hall room keys, these can be obtained at the Office of Access Control. The existing policies regarding a grace period to try to locate the residence hall room key still applies.
Found Cards
- Once a card is reported lost or stolen it is deactivated.
If you then find it prior to obtaining a replacement card, it can only
be reactivated by showing it at either the ID Office or the Office of
Access Control. It cannot be reactivated by telephone or remotely after hours.
- FOUND CARDS ( someone else's or yours after obtaining a replacement ) must be returned to the Office of Access Control or the ID Office.
Do NOT "hold on to the card", or attempt to return it "to its proper
owner" ( assuming it is not yours ). Both of these violate University
Policy. The ID Office or the Office of Access Control can see to it
that cards are properly handled, and if a card has not been replaced,
can get it to its proper owner at no charge. For after business hours, there is a key drop drawer on the front of the Access Control Office,
into which the card can be returned. No credit is given toward the
bursar bill for returned cards once a replacement has been issued, but
the returned cards help to improve overall security for the University
and thus protect YOU.
- If your card does not work in an area to
which you should be authorized, contact the Office of Access Control at
758-6175 during the business day. If you get the Voice Mail
system, be sure to give your social security number, your name, a phone
number where you can be contacted, the Lost Card Issue Number ( A
single digit number on the bottom center of the face of the card ) and
the area for which the card is not working. It will usually not be
necessary for you to stop into the Office of Access Control in person
unless the problem is directly related to your card itself, which is
unlikely.
