FAQ

What are my options for study abroad?

Lehigh offers semester and year-long programs all over the world.  There are also Lehigh University Programs that go over winter break and during the summer.  Other summer options can be explored through our office, to fit your interest.

Do I have to wait until my junior year?

No!  There are study abroad possibilities for everyone - even first-year students.  For example, you can go on a 3-week winter, or 5-week summer, program with Lehigh professors and students.  (How does New Year's in Spain or Costa Rica or Ghana sound?)  And as early as your second sophomore semester, you can go on semester or year study abroad programs.

How much does it cost?

For semester and year programs, you pay regular Lehigh tuition - and if you have any sort of financial aid, it travels with you.  Housing and meals are usually billed to you by your program.  You are responsible for the cost of travel, and in most cases, low fares can be found online.

My major has pretty specific requirements.  Can I still study abroad?

We can help you find a program to fit your major - including all you engineers!  It's important to plan early, even if you're not 100% sure you want to go.  It's also important to keep your grades up and save electives, when you can.

When should I start planning for a semester or year abroad?

Now.  Start thinking about where you want to go, when, and for how long.  Then, a semester or two before you want to go, stop by the Study Abroad Office. Attend a general information session or make an appointment to speak with either the Director or the Study Abroad Advisor.

How do I know the program I've chosen is a good one?

Lehigh approved programs have been requested by and/or approved by Lehigh faculty to provide students with a high-quality academic opportunity and a cultural immersion experience.  These programs are conceived of as a integral part of a Lehigh undergraduate education.  Students remain fully enrolled at Lehigh, earn Lehigh credit, may utilize Lehigh financial aid and scholarships, and benefit from the involvement of the faculty and staff at Lehigh before, during, and after their time abroad.

Studying abroad is a special opportunity and you should research programs carefully in order to make the most of it.  Programs that are affiliated with universities in the host country are often the strongest academically and the best integrated into the local culture.  Consider how the reputation of the program you choose may impact your credentials for graduate school or employment.

Do I need to be fluent in another language?

No.  In fact, studying abroad is one of the best ways to acquire new language skills.  In countries where English is not the primary language, programs are designed for students with varying degrees of language skill.  One year of language preparation is often sufficient for programs that offer courses primarily in English, while two years is often the minimum requirement for programs that offer courses in the host language.

Are programs ever cancelled?

For answers on program cancellation go to Study Abroad's Contingency Planning and Procedures.

What can be petitioned?

If you need to petition your GPA, disciplinary history, or program, please see Petitioning.

Are there any scholarships available for traveling abroad?

Yes, there are fellowships and scholarships available. For information visit the site for the Office of Fellowship Advising.
